Whether for the playground, a walk, or the transitional seasons — a good baby overall is worth its weight in gold in many situations. But which one is right for which weather? The selection ranges from boiled-wool overalls and softshell suits to rain overalls, and each has its purpose.
Why an Overall Is So Practical
An overall protects baby all around from cold, wind, and moisture, without anything slipping or being exposed. Especially for small children who aren't walking yet or spend a lot of time in the stroller, that's particularly important. A well-chosen one-piece also makes dressing easier — you only need to decide what to put underneath.
Boiled-Wool Overall (Walk): Naturally Warm for Fall & Winter
A Walk overall is made of boiled wool, a natural material with great properties:
- Warms reliably without overheating
- Is breathable, water- and wind-repellent
- Perfect for temperatures between 0 and 15 °C
- Ideal for babies who move little (stroller, carrier)
Make sure your baby isn't bundled up too thick under the Walk suit. A bodysuit, a shirt, and possibly leggings are often enough.
Softshell Overall: Ideal for the Transitional Seasons
Softshell is a light, windproof, water-repellent material — perfect for windy or changeable days in spring or fall. It's more flexible than boiled wool and works well for active babies or toddlers who are already crawling or walking.
Advantages:
- Freedom of movement
- Light and quick-drying
- Often with reflectors and a removable hood
Disadvantages:
- Not quite as warm as boiled wool, so better suited for mild days
Rain Suit: Maximum Moisture Protection
A classic rain overall is made of coated polyester or polyurethane. It reliably protects your child from wetness — for example, on walks in the rain, in wet grass, or on the playground after a shower.
Important: rain suits are usually not lined! So you need suitable layers underneath, ranging from a bodysuit to a wool sweater, depending on the temperature.
A rain suit isn't a warming layer; it's a shield against moisture. The warmth comes from the clothes underneath.
Conclusion: Which Overall for Which Weather?
| Weather conditions | Ideal for | Recommended overall |
|---|---|---|
| Cold & dry | Fall/Winter | Boiled-wool overall (Walk) |
| Windy & mild | Spring/Fall | Softshell overall |
| Wet & cool | All year | Rain suit (with layers underneath) |
What Should I Dress My Baby In Under the Overall?
- In mild weather: Bodysuit + thin pants + shirt
- In cool weather: Bodysuit + sweater + leggings or tights
- In cold weather: Bodysuit + wool clothing + mittens, hat, possibly a scarf
The Wetterbaby app tells you each day which overall and which layers underneath are best for your baby — tailored to temperature, precipitation, and wind.
