Most parents know the feeling: the closet is full of little rompers, hats, and bodysuits, but every morning the same question comes up: What should I dress my baby in today? Weather, season, and activity all influence the choice — but with a few simple rules, you can combine your baby clothes cleverly and be well prepared for any weather.
The Essentials — What You Really Need
Especially when buying the first wardrobe, many parents buy too much or the wrong things. You don't need huge quantities — just the right items in good quality:
- 5–7 bodysuits (short- and long-sleeve, depending on the season)
- 5–6 rompers or pants
- 2–3 sweaters or jackets
- 1–2 overalls (boiled-wool, softshell, or rain suit)
- 2 hats (thin & warm)
- 1 pair of mittens + thick socks
- 1 sleeping bag with a suitable TOG value
This base can be combined ideally with changing layers — depending on whether it's warm, cool, or wet outside.
Baby Clothes in Layers: The Onion Principle
Several thin layers instead of one thick one — that's how you adapt clothing to the current baby weather. Especially practical: you can take off individual layers any time it gets warmer or when you move from outside to inside.
Example of a spring outfit at 15 °C:
- Long-sleeve bodysuit
- Thin romper or pants
- Cotton sweater
- Windproof jacket
- Hat
The neck check helps here too: if the neck feels warm (not hot!), the outfit is right. Cold hands aren't a reliable sign that your baby feels cold.
What Should I Dress My Baby In? By Weather
| Weather | Clothing recommendation |
|---|---|
| Sunny & warm | Short-sleeve bodysuit + UV hat + light pants or dress if needed |
| Windy & cool | Bodysuit + sweater + jacket or overall |
| Rainy weather | Bodysuit + romper + rain suit + hat + waterproof |
| Winter day | Wool-silk bodysuit + sweater + boiled-wool overall + warm accessories |
Pay attention to good materials like cotton, wool-silk, boiled wool, or breathable functional fabrics. Avoid synthetics for the innermost layer — they can trap moisture and cause irritation.
Staying Practical & Flexible
-
Keep 1–2 items of clothing in the diaper bag (e.g. a vest or spare bodysuit)
-
Mark clothing by temperature (e.g. with symbols on the label) — it helps you grab the right thing quickly
-
Only buy seasonal items (e.g. UV clothing or thick overalls) in limited quantities, since babies grow quickly
