Babies lose body heat faster than adults and can't yet regulate their temperature well. That's why it's especially important to dress them appropriately for the outdoor temperature. Layering, that is, several thin layers on top of each other, is the best solution for that.
What Is the Layering Principle?
With layering, your baby is dressed in several layers of clothing that can be quickly put on or taken off depending on the temperature. That way, you can flexibly respond to weather changes without your child getting cold or overheating.
- Base layer: A soft, breathable bodysuit directly on the skin. Best in cotton.
- Middle layer: A long-sleeve shirt or a romper. This layer provides warmth.
- Outer layer: A jacket or overall. Wind- and/or water-repellent, depending on conditions.
- Extras: Hat, scarf, socks, or mittens. Especially important in cold weather.
Adapting Layers to Weather and Activity
The number of layers depends heavily on the outdoor temperature, the wind, and your baby's activity. In the stroller, your child needs more warmth than in the carrier, since they move less and don't get your body heat. In the early morning, additional layers are often needed; over the course of the day, you can reduce them as needed.
The Neck Check: How to Tell If Your Baby Is Dressed Right
A simple trick helps you tell whether your baby is dressed too warmly or too coolly: feel your child's neck with your hand. The neck should be warm but not sweaty. Cold feet or hands are normal in babies and aren't a reliable indicator.
Common Layering Mistakes
- Materials that are too thick, which trap heat instead of warming
- No layers to remove when the temperature rises
- Moisture due to insufficient breathability
Better to rely on several thin, breathable layers than on a single thick overall, that way your baby stays more comfortably temperature-regulated.
