Why Infants Get Cold Faster and How to Dress Them Right

Especially in the first months of life, many parents face the same question every day: "Is my baby too cold? Or maybe too warm?" No wonder — infants sense temperature very differently from adults. Here we explain why that is and how to dress your baby ideally for any kind of weather.

Why Babies Get Cold Faster

Newborns find it particularly hard to regulate their own body temperature. This is due to several factors:

  • Large body surface area relative to weight: Babies lose heat faster.
  • Low muscle mass: They can't yet counteract cold as well through shivering.
  • An immature nervous system: Temperature regulation isn't yet fully functioning.
  • Little brown fat tissue: The special "heating fat" babies have doesn't last long against cold.

Especially the head, hands, and feet cool down very quickly in babies. So it's important to protect these body parts well — with a hat, mittens, or thick socks, depending on the weather.

Overheating Is Just as Dangerous

As understandable as the fear of cold is, too much warmth can be just as risky. An overheated baby doesn't necessarily sweat visibly but often seems restless or drowsy. Studies show: overheating is a risk factor for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

So: even in cooler temperatures, "more" isn't always "better." Finding the right balance is what counts.

The Solution: Layering

The so-called layering principle has proven its worth: several thin layers of clothing that you can flexibly put on or take off. A rule of thumb: your baby should wear one more layer than you. So if you're going out with a sweater and jacket, your baby is well equipped with a bodysuit, romper, and overall.

Check tip: Feel your baby's neck. If it's comfortably warm there (not cold or sweaty), all's well.

How Wetterbaby Helps

With our Wetterbaby app, you get the right clothing recommendation for your baby every day — based on the current weather and your child's age. The app even shows you the UV index so you know when sunscreen or a sun hat is needed.

We're also working on integrating sustainable baby clothing directly into the recommendations in the future, because we believe comfort, safety, and environmental awareness belong together.

Conclusion

Babies need special protection in wind and weather. But it's just as important to avoid overheating. With the right knowledge and suitable everyday support — for example, through the Wetterbaby app — you can move through the seasons relaxed.
