Your baby's skin is delicate, permeable, and not yet fully developed. That makes it especially vulnerable to outside influences like sun, wind, cold, or dry air. Proper weather protection therefore starts not just with clothing, but also with the right skincare.
Why Baby Skin Needs Special Protection
Unlike adult skin, baby skin is significantly thinner, contains less fat and moisture, and is more permeable to pollutants or UV rays. Temperature differences, wind, or too much sun can quickly irritate, dry out, or even damage it.
In the first year especially, it's important to provide skin protection suited to current conditions in every kind of weather.
Wind and Weather: Using Protective Creams Correctly
In cold wind or dry cold, you should protect your baby with a rich wind-and-weather cream. It forms a protective barrier on the skin without clogging the pores.
Watch for:
- No perfumes or preservatives
- Free of mineral oils
- Natural cosmetics preferred (e.g. with calendula, lanolin, or shea butter)
Important: The cream should be applied at least 15 minutes before going outside, otherwise the moisture in it hasn't evaporated yet and could freeze in the cold.
Sun Protection in Summer
From 6 months on, you can apply mineral sunscreen to uncovered skin areas. Before that, you should rely exclusively on UV clothing, shade, and sun hats. Babies under one year should generally not be exposed to direct sunlight.
Tips:
- Sun protection factor of at least 50+
- Fragrance-free, without alcohol
- Choose products specifically for sensitive baby skin
UV rays work even in the shade and under cloudy skies! Protect your baby consistently on sunny days.
Skincare in Heat & Dry Air
Warm temperatures, sweat, and air conditioning can additionally irritate your baby's skin. So:
- Bathe only once a day with lukewarm water without soap
- Gently apply a light lotion or care oil after bathing
- Have your baby wear cotton clothing — it irritates the skin less than synthetic fabrics
Skincare in Cold & Heated Indoor Air
In winter, not only the cold outside air is a concern but also the dry air from heating. It can dry out the skin or even lead to eczema.
- Keep room temperature around 18–20 °C
- Use a humidifier or place damp cloths on the radiator
- Use gentle, replenishing bath additives
