The skin of babies and toddlers is delicate, sensitive, and especially vulnerable to sun damage. Especially in the first years of life, effective sun protection is essential to avoid painful sunburns and long-term skin damage. In this article, we explain why baby skin is so vulnerable and what you absolutely need to watch out for when it comes to sun protection.
Baby Skin Is More Sensitive Than You Think
Infant skin differs greatly from adult skin:
- It's thinner, so UV radiation penetrates deeper.
- The pigment cells that protect against UV rays aren't fully matured yet.
- Babies have less melanin, meaning less natural protection.
- The skin's own defense system against UV damage develops over time.
In short: a sunburn in childhood can significantly raise the risk of skin cancer in adulthood.
Direct Sun? No Thanks!
In the first year of life, babies should as much as possible not be exposed to direct sunlight. Shade, suitable clothing, and head coverings are the best protection during this time.
The same applies in the stroller or on the balcony: pull down the sun cover, dress in long sleeves and pants, ideally UV-tight.
Sunscreen — But Done Right
From the first year of life, sunscreen with a high sun protection factor (at least SPF 30, better 50+) can be used additionally — but always only in addition to clothing and shade. Make sure the cream:
- Offers UVA and UVB protection
- Is suitable for sensitive skin
- Is fragrance-free and ideally mineral-based (especially for sensitive skin)
Don't forget to reapply regularly, especially after bathing or sweating.
