Fresh air is good for babies — even in rain, wind, or cool temperatures. But how much weather is still healthy for a baby, and where's the limit? In this article, you'll learn when you can safely go out with your baby and when it's better to stay home.
Why Fresh Air Is So Important
Even in dreary weather, a walk strengthens the immune system, gets circulation going, and can work wonders for restless babies. As long as your child is dressed appropriately and you keep a few basic rules in mind, nothing stands in the way of a trip outdoors.
When You're Better Off Staying Home
There are, of course, weather conditions when a walk isn't advisable:
- Strong storms or gusts from wind force 5 (trees visibly bending)
- Thunderstorms, hail, or heavy rain
- Extreme cold below –8 °C or icy roads
- Heat waves above 32 °C without access to shade
In such cases, it's better to stay indoors and prioritize airing out the apartment.
Clothing and Protection in Unpleasant Weather
- Dress your baby using the layering principle so you can respond flexibly to temperature changes.
- A wind- and water-repellent overall reliably keeps moisture and drafts out.
- A hat is a must, even in mild wind.
- In the stroller, a rain cover with ventilation slots provides protection.
- In a baby carrier, your body heat adds extra warmth. Just remember a rain cape!
Watch Your Baby's Signals
Babies can't yet say when they're too cold or too warm. So your attentiveness is needed. Cold hands or feet are often normal — what matters more is the neck check: if the neck is warm but not sweaty, the clothing fits.
After the walk, briefly undress your baby and check for moisture or overheating. That helps prevent skin irritation.
The Wetterbaby app tells you every day whether the weather is suitable for a walk — including a clothing recommendation for your baby.
