Vacation With Baby: How to Make Your First Trip Down South Relaxing

The first summer vacation with baby is coming up... how exciting! Sun, an unfamiliar setting, and new impressions make the trip special. At the same time, it raises lots of questions for parents: What should I dress my baby in down south? How does my baby stay protected in the heat? And what should I watch out for with sleep at the hotel?

Clothing: Less Is More (But Well Thought Out)

When temperatures exceed 25 °C, go for light, airy clothing made of breathable materials like cotton or linen. Ideal items are:

  • Short-sleeve bodysuit or thin romper
  • Sun hat with brim and neck flap
  • UV clothing for the beach or pool
  • Possibly a light gauze or muslin blanket as a shade provider

Important: even in hot regions, evenings can be cool. So bring at least one long-sleeve set and a thin jacket.

Sun Protection: Rely on Shade

Delicate baby skin should never be exposed to direct sunlight. So use:

  • UV sail or sun umbrella on the stroller
  • UV clothing with SPF 50+
  • Mineral sunscreen (from 6 months) only on small uncovered areas

Tip: a sun hat is a must even in the shade!

Sleeping at the Hotel: Cool & Safe

Many vacation accommodations are hot, so watch out for:

  • Room temperature between 18–22 °C (bring a thermometer!)
  • Light sleeping bag with TOG 0.5–1.0
  • Never aim air conditioning or fans directly at the baby
  • Have a travel crib or a well-ventilated mattress ready

The climate may feel unfamiliar. Observe your baby closely. If they sleep restlessly or sweat heavily, take a layer off.

Other Travel Hacks

  • Diaper bag with spare clothes, gauze cloths, spray bottle (for cooling)
  • Plenty of drinking — nursing or water (depending on age)
  • Small fans or water sprays for on the go
